Here is a step-by-step guide on how to mix resin and catalyst:

How to Mix Resin and Catalyst

You will need:

Polyester resin

Catalyst

Catalyst dispenser

A smooth mixing surface

Stir sticks

Roller or brush

Flathead screwdriver

Gloves

Step 1: The first thing you need to do is put on a pair of gloves. Then open the polyester resin container. If you opt for a canned version, the flathead screwdriver will help you to loosen the lid.

Step 2: You then want to give the resin a good mix with a stirring stick or heavy duty mixer as this kind of material often settles to the bottom of the container. Before you move on to the next step make sure the resin is mixed well and consistent.

Step 3: Decant the amount of resin you’ll need onto a clean smooth surface (1kg at a time for best results) and then consult your measurements. Catalyst and resin usually come in proportioned containers, for example half a can of each should be mixed. This usually works on a ratio of 1% to 2% catalyst to 100% resin ratio. Pour the correct amount of catalyst into a 15ml dispenser.

Step 4: Slowly push out the catalyst and mix the two products together with a tool that can be thrown away after use. Stir sticks, like those you use for paint, are ideal. Then throw the stick and dispenser tool away as soon as you’re done with them to avoid contact with other items.

Step 5: Apply your mixture using either a roller or brush depending on the size of space you are covering and wait to dry. You may also want to dispose of your roller or brush.

Safety Warnings!

Catalyst is a corrosive material and is highly flammable. As a result, heat and direct sunlight can affect it, in some cases rendering it useless, so make sure to store this material in a cool dry place such as a garage.

When mixing, ensure you don’t stir too vigorously and splash or spill any material. You should also wear gloves and safety goggles if available. Avoid skin contact by wearing protective clothing and if contact does occur, seek medical attention immediately. Keep out of the reach of children and/or pets.
