You’re reached that point in your live where you’ve decided that you want to do it yourself, but you don’t know where to start. There are so many projects that need to be tackled and you don’t have the tools, knowledge or ability to just crack on with it.

At Speedy Plastics we believe that everyone should have a go at DIY which is why we’ve put together this handy guide to get you started.

How to DIY

how to DIyBefore you do anything else, you need to have the right tools for the job in question. If you haven’t got a specific project in mind, but rather want to undertake a range of DIY tasks as and when they come up then a general tool kit is essential.

If you’re looking to put together a complete toolkit then follow our guide here.

Got a project in mind? Finding out exactly what tools you need for the job is important, so make sure you do this before you start – nothing more annoying than getting halfway through and not being able to complete the task. A quick Google search of the task in question should give you a rundown of the tools and materials required.

Handling the Tools

This is where knowing how to DIY is important. Not being able to correctly use the tools you need can end up in a poor finish in the best-case scenario and a disaster in worst-case. It takes time and practice in order to be a dab hand with the tools you need, so give yourself plenty of time to complete the task and try to practice on small areas or scrap pieces of material.

Depending on how you learn, there are plenty of online video tutorials to walk you through most tools. Alternatively, have a go yourself and improve on your technique as you go along – it pays off to do your first few DIY projects with someone with a bit more experience.

Finding the Solution

If you’re new to DIY then knowing how to fix the problem you’re up against can be very difficult. One of the first places people turn to for the answer to their question is Google. We’ve put together a wide selection of the most common DIY questions here.

Can’t find the answer you’re looking for?  If its plastics and resins related then why not give Speedy Plastics a call on 0844 8586 670? Our team of experts are on hand to help talk you through any DIY task, making sure you have the right tools and materials and know exactly what needs to be done.

Fixing the Problem

With your first project make sure you give yourself plenty of time to fix it. Don’t be ashamed to take a full day to do a ‘small’ project – getting it done right is far more important than finishing it quickly. If you have someone more experience with DIY on hand then ask them if they will come to supervise and help, this will give you more confidence and an extra pair of hands can be extremely helpful.

Having a smartphone or tablet available can make it easy to run through tutorial video while carrying out the task. This is particularly good if you forget what the next step is or get confused at some stage along the way.
