Pond Maintenance: Looking after your pond

Over time your pond lining can become worn, and cracks can appear. Here are some useful tips to patch up your old pond, and get it back up, and running.

Should you notice a drop in water level and ruled out any other causes such as waterfall, and hoses it is likely you have a leak in the liner.

Patch - Once you identify the leak it may be possible to simply purchase a patch, just like a tire to resolve the leak, if the liner is made from rubber or EPDM.

Seal any cracks – Use a sealant such as G4 Pond Sealer to seal an entire pond or the most common use of sealing any exposed mortar around any brickwork or stonework that surrounds the pond and waterfall areas. This will not only help ensure any harmful lime does not filter into the pond, but also increase the resistance of the treated surfaces from weathering, maintaining your pond.

Re-line  - If the pond is made from concrete it may be time to think about re-lining the pond as any cracks can be more difficult to repair, and unfortunately are not as simply as buying a patch. Because concrete is brittle, and continuously moving, freezing, and thawing concrete is one of the hardest materials to repair. Attempting to patch any cracks in the concrete would only be a temporary measure as it will most likely only hold the water back for a few weeks.

Glass Fibre is an excellent, and very suitable material to use in the re-lining of your pond. Not only is GRP resistant to weathering, and temperature variations, it also provides a water tight, smooth and easy to clean surface.

If you do decide to re-line your pond it is always advisable to seek professional advice to ensure the methods and products used are not toxic to fish.
