A saw is one of the most widely used tools, however without ensuring the necessary precautions are taken, cutting corners and improper use a saw can be a very dangerous piece of equipment leading to accidents and injuries.

Below are some do’s and don’ts when operating a saw:

1)    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Do – Always wear the appropriate PPE for the task at hand as there is always a risk of splinters flying and inhalation of dangerous fumes. E.g. Goggles – to protect eyes from flying splinters, Gloves – to protect hands and face masks to prevent inhalation of fumes i.e. when working with materials such as fiberglass insulation boards.

2)    Workstation

Don’t – Use a make shift bench when sawing. Unstable workstations are an accident waiting to happen

Do – keep your workstation clean and clear of cutoffs and excess saw dust. Not only can a cluttered work station impair the operator’s ability to make clear, safe cuts but also loose pieces of stock can become a projective if it contacts a moving blade.

3)    Equipment

Do - visually inspect saw before each use for any signs of damage i.e. loose handle or missing blades.

Don’t – ever test the sharpness of a saw with your hand or other part of your body

Do – Keep the saw clean to ensure it operates correctly

Do – Store in a safe enclosed place to keep out of the way of the wrong people i.e. children

Don’t - reach over a moving blade, a stumble or trip could cause serious injury

Do – disconnect the power before changing the blade to eliminate the possibility the saw may inadvertently turn on

Don’t – Start the saw with the blade engaged in the material

4)    Material

Do – Ensure the material in kept firmly in place, where possible use a vise or clamp for this purpose

Do – Check material carefully for any knots, nails or screws as these can cause damage to the saw as well as injury to yourself.

To eliminate unnecessary accidents, or serious injury, always ensure you read the manufacturer’s instructions prior to use, and don’t cut corners!
