To make sure that your home does not falling into disrepair after the winter months, it is important to take the right preventative measures. There are many jobs that can be under taken which are very easy to do, but which will have long term benefits.

Below are a list of these jobs :-

Gutters – clean out gutters as regularly as you can. By removing leaves, sticks and other debris it will heighten the chances of snow melting therefore letting the water flow away freely.Flood Sign

Gutter guards – by installing gutter guards this will prevent leaves and other debris from entering the gutter system, and consequently blockages will not occur, and cause problems in the future.

Exterior pipes – if you have exterior pipes they should be fitted with insulating sleeves to prevent freezing.

Interior pipes – every now and then by opening cabinet doors in kitchen and bathroom it will allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

External cracks – any external cracks no matter how small need to be filled. If they are not filled water can get inside and turn to ice, when expansion occurs the cracks will become bigger and more costly to repair in the long run.

Ventilating attic – your attic space should be well ventilated, this will minimize the melting and refreezing process on the roof.

Footpaths – if snowfall occurs any outside paths and drains should be cleared. This will allow water to run away freely therefore preventing the risk of flooding.

Home uninhabited – if you are going away and your home is uninhabited for more than 4 days, arrange for a friend to come over and regularly check the heating.

By using these simple steps it will help prevent any damage and unwanted problems occurring to your home over the winter months.
